Head of School SIAS (First Nations identified role)

We are seeking an experienced leader to serve as Head of The School of Indigenous Australian Studies. Reporting to the Executive Dean in the Faculty of Arts & Education, the role is accountable for the school’s performance in teaching, research, and resource management.

The ideal candidate will drive the school’s alignment with the Faculty and University’s strategies, ensuring cohesive operations that support high-quality education, impactful research, and community engagement.

Key responsibilities of the position include leading strategic and operational planning, managing resources to meet budget targets, and mentoring academic staff to ensure accountability and high performance. The Head of School will also build and maintain strong relationships with industry, government, and community partners, elevating the school’s profile nationally and internationally.

The successful candidate will promote innovative teaching practices, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, and foster a culturally safe environment for all. Additionally, the Head of School will chair the Indigenous Board of Studies, overseeing the integration of Indigenous Australian content into courses. The successful candidate will have proven leadership in academia and demonstrate excellence in teaching and research.

About us

The Faculty of Arts and Education offers a diversity of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in teacher education, communication, social work and human services, Indigenous Australian Studies, library and information studies, theology, humanities and arts, and Islamic studies.

With over 10,000 students, the faculty is an innovator in online and blended learning modes. Over 160 FTE academic staff deliver distinctive courses and are supported by a skilled team of professional staff. On campus courses are delivered at the University’s Wagga Wagga, Albury-Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo, and Port Macquarie campuses, and at other locations including Sydney and Canberra.

Academic staff within the faculty undertake high quality, impactful research that engages with government and professional organisations, nationally, internationally and in regional communities. The Faculty of Arts and Education has a vibrant and diverse community of doctoral candidates, both on and off campus, in Australia and around the world.

The School of Indigenous Australian Studies develops, delivers and promotes Indigenous Australian Studies to all students studying at Charles Sturt University. The School develops research and consultancy links with local communities, institutions, services and agencies, together with national and international scholarly communities.
